Let Us Introduce You To…Scavenger Design!

Deanna is very excited to introduce you to her dear friend and neighbour’s new business venture, Scavenger Designs.

Neil Sherwood uses the driftwood from our beautiful local beaches and combines them with industrial items such as old logging chains to create one-of-a-kind pieces. Some of his work is even being featured in Willow Point’s newest restaurant, SoCal.

Here is a little more about Neil and Scavenger Designs, uniquely provided by Neil himself!

I recently sat down for tea with the owner of a neat new business in town called Scavenger Design. We met in his workshop which is a gazebo facing the ocean, close enough to the beach that you can hear the Surf Scooters chat with each other. Surrounding the gazebo are hundred year old Douglas firs which block out the Sun. It’s a cold day in late February and I was not prepared to interview outside, Neil on the other hand was in his element and thankful for an Earl Grey break.

What do you do here?

Neil: I make interior and exterior lights and furniture out of driftwood. I like to combine the pieces with metal that I find on the beach. I pair some pieces with antique, industrial lights or items of a nautical nature, as well as add the odd industrial touch. Sometimes I keep the metal or wood as natural as possible and some pieces I shape into something cleaner. My preference is to simply buff up the metal to remove the rust but keep the beautiful patina that the ocean provides. Give me a pitted and well used logging chain to hang a drift wood light over store bought chain any day.

What’s an average day for you?

Neil: I like to be on the beach for sunrise, rain or shine, and go for a walk, see what I can find. If I run into some chain or a piece or two of wood that I immediately see can be made into something unique then I grab ‘er and take ‘er home. Then I’ll spend the rest of the day working with the wood and metal to create unique pieces that are undeniably west coast.

How did you get started?

Neil: I was tired of working in Alberta. I love Campbell River and wanted to stay home. When I couldn’t find work in my field here I just started making lights. It’s a no-brainer for me as I love to beach comb, be close to the water and work with my hands. I might not be making Alberta money yet but you can’t put a price tag on how happy I am now.

Where do you see your business going?

Neil: I see clients coming to me through word of mouth. We take a look at where they want a statement piece placed in their home or business, and then I find the right piece of wood and get ‘er done. I just want to keep it simple.

Thanks for the tea.

Neil: Thanks for the interview

Seaview Game Farm is 168 acres of farm located on one mile of pristine waterfront located in Black Creek, British Columbia. Purchased by Paul Pfleger in 1973, it was transformed from a swampland and developed for hay, forage and crops. The intent of the farm was to build an environment where humans and animals coexisted in the grandest of environments. Over the years, barns, houses, greenhouses, retail space and oceanfront accommodations have been constructed. Today over 200 head of Fallow Deer, 25 grass-fed Highland Cattle, 40 laying hens, Goats, Alpacas, Horses, Llamas and a very happy pig all live on the farm. In the spring and summer months, fresh fruits and vegetables are grown. The farm store sells farm raised venison and grass-fed beef, free range eggs, fresh produce and specialty homemade products made with ingredients grown and raised right here on the farm.
